I was able to get more adjustment by cutting a slot in a nut and sliding it over the end of the cable up at the front end. I crimped it on just below the cable end and that gave me another 1/4 inch of adjustment. It's worked fine that way for over 6 months and the brakes work as they should. I am not sure that a new cable would be any better so I would try what I did first.
