Depends on how they are wired. Most of the time, yes. And sometimes it even needs to be in F or R. If it is an aftermarket setup then it's entirely possible that the lights can come on when the key is off.

Be sure to check the inside of the rear axle. Flood carts typically end up with water inside of the rear end. Salt water is very corrosive. The inside of the frame rails probably need to be rinsed out with plenty of fresh water to get rid of salt deposits that have dried there. You may want to do a teardown and soak everytheng really good with fresh water before going any fuirther.

As for the lights if it is a factory installed set the second click of the key turns them on.

ok guys.. thanks..i rinsed everything and used pressure sprayer from air compressor to dry..key switch has 1 click..has a switch..i had to replace both..

where else can I find date code of my cart..sticker under seat unreadable..it is ezgo..36v..

it has lights with the small amber ones beside the headlights..no code on dash..

To help ID the year, a few hi res pics of the "under the seat" area are very helpful. also how many bolts secure the steering column to the floor (3 or 4)

post those when you can,

If it has/had the sticker under the seat it is probably a 2003 or newer. It was around then when they converted to the sticker. There might be one on the frame rail on the driver's side next to the brake pedal assembly but it probably won't be readable either. For what you are doing the year doesn't matter much anyway.
