Default Club Car Precedent Battery Issue, cont.

Back in March I posted a question with the title of 2010 Precedent Battery Issue. I received lots of useful info, but I continue to have issues. Over the past few months I have monitored the ability of my batteries to get me around the golf course under many varied conditions and has led me to this question:

Does the horsepower rating of a DC motor have an affect on the battery pack? I replaced my 3.3 hp factory motor, with a 9.1 hp motor (factory controller).

It will draw more from the pack if you use it more than before....

To get more power it would need to draw more power from the batteries. The same as if you want an eight cylinder engine it will use more fuel than a 4 cylinder one.

So Yawood, would upgrading the controller hurt/help the situation or should I upgrade to a more robust battery pack, like Torjan 890? I currently have Crown CG 165 batteries.

Upgrading the controller to, say an Alltrax XCT will certainly help you to get more performance from your more powerful motor. It probably would not get you more distance out of that battery pack. How old are your batteries? If you have tested the battery voltages how about you share them here so that we can see what condition they are in.

Record the voltage of each battery and the pack before you charge them. Then record them again about 12 hours after the charge is complete. Then drive the cart and record the voltages as you accelerate so that we can see how they are under load. It is important to record the individual batteries as well as the pack because it only takes one battery to be weak to diminish the performance of the pack.

How many holes are you able to play? Is it a flat or hilly course? With new/good batteries you should be able to play 36 holes on a single charge.

Crown CR165 batteries are on the lighter side so you won't get the performance of the Trojan T875, or the US Battery equivalent because they have a 20 hr rating of 170 amp hrs compared to the Crown of 165. Quite a few on this forum have recommended the Crown CR190's. These fit and give you more amp hours than your 165s would. Even so, the 165s should be able to do the job if they are in good condition.

The pack is 20 months old. 12 hrs after a charge, with water level full, I have 51.9 volts overall and 8.4v on each battery. Did a load test on each batteries back in March and they all started out at 8.4v and under load all dropped to 7.6v (they were tested on a very steep grade).
I can get a full 18 holes from a full charge, if I ride by myself, when a put someone else in the cart, I can barely make 18, and usually need an assist on the final uphill portion of #18. The course I play is moderately hilly.
The suggestion that the motor is drawing more power from a somewhat lower rated battery makes perfect sense based upon the performance I get in actual use.

8.4 volts on each battery would be 50.4 volts total. Your meter is probably out of cal. You can't make any diagnosis based your meter readings. But it does sound like you have bad batteries.

Remember we need the exact readings, not the pretnear readings.

OK, here are the results of today's battery testing, hope this makes sense.

Column 1 is 12 hrs after charger shutdown
Column 2 is voltage pre test
Column 3 is voltage under load (road test on grade, est. 5 to 6%, 1/8 mile)
Column 4 is voltage after load test
Column 5 is voltage under load after complete test

1 2 3 4 5
Pack 50.9 50.9 45.6 50.4 44.5
Battery 1 8.4 8.4 7.6 8.3
Battery 2 8.4 8.4 7.6 8.4
Battery 3 8.4 8.4 7.6 8.4
Battery 4 8.3 8.3 7.5 8.3
Battery 5 8.4 8.3 7.5 8.3
Battery 6 8.4 8.3 7.5 8.3
