What would cause this fire?
Initial reports state that a golf cart was the cause of a fire that also ignited surrounding houses. This is at Ocean Lakes campground in Myrtle Beach. Would this be more likely to happen from The charger or an issue with the cart? And what type of maintenance needs to be done to keep this from happening?

Gas or electric? No simple answer. Could have been a lot of things.
Happens with cars, lawn mowers, motorcycles etc. Not long a go not far from here a boat's gas tank exploded. Detached garage luckily nobody hurt. |

If they say more about it, please keep us updated. Certainly it could have been an electric cart. Anything can happen with lots of stuff.

Gas cars aren't allowed at Ocean Lakes. It was definitely an electric car. A spark can ignite a battery. It's very important to keep the top of your batteries clean and free of acid and keep your terminals tight. If the terminal sparks while it's charging and ignites the gasses it could cause an explosion.

I threw a box of matches on mine, then a rose bud off my oxy/act torch and I got nothing.... Wait a minute, I have a lithium pack....

This is a gas cart. Happened in 2012. Recent reports locally of fires started by cart chargers using extension cords. However, there are thousands of carts here. Statistically golf cart fire is still a rarity.

Lets drop one of those lithium packs on the floor and see what happens!
I'd knock it down to poor maintenance practice. Without knowing more details it's impossible to say what started it, but something in the range of neglected batteries, or incorrect charging habits would be the most likely. There is a reason I don't leave carts charging overnight in my shop. |
