Default transaxle grinding noise

History: ran the car up a slight bank and stopped. I let is coast backwards down(about 10 feet) without putting in neutral or reverse. When I went to go forward again, the rear end began 'grinding' for lack of a better term. It's a 97 DS, lifted, big tires, has an aftermarket motor

Status: I removed the motor thinking (hoping) it was the little guide ring, but as this is an aftermarket motor, there isn't one.

Plan: jack up the rear and turn the input, see if I hear the noise. Beyond that I'm guessing I'll have to remove and tear into the transaxle.

I would appreciate any advice on how to do that, or other things to check. This is my first post, but I've lurked and learned a lot - thanks!

If the motor is removed does it still make noise? You should be able to just roll the cart in the driveway and hear it if so. Turning the input shaft by hand probably won’t spin it fast enough to hear anything.

I have a hard time believing simply coasting backwards 10 feet would damage the rear end. Every time you put the cart in reverse it spins the same way, the motor just reversed polarity and drives jr forward or reverse.

Maybe something popped off in the brakes like one of the pins or something? Noise can radiate pretty far and sound like it is coming from somewhere it’s not.

If the noise is coming from the rear driveline anywhere, you should be able to hear it by jacking up the rear and turning one wheel forward and reverse with the motor installed.

Like CP241 mentioned, it is unlikely you damaged anything in the driveline by rolling backwards. I know I have done that inadvertently at times.

Did you happen to jam the brakes as it was rolling backwards? If so, most likely is a brake issue as CP241 said.

Depends if you stalled the motor, or were trying to dig a hole to China by spinning the wheels and digging into the dirt.
A stalled motor (cart stops but you keep pressing the go pedal even though it isn’t moving) will roast the brushes and the commutator bars on the armature in the motor.
Delaminated commutator bars will make a hell of a racket until they either get ripped out completely or they shred the brushes to dust.

Well, I jacked it up and ran it, definitely the motor (as verified by the screwdriver touching the case). So I pulled the motor off. I got the tell-tale whiff of burnt carbon.
I pulled the rear case off, and the commutator has some bluing and score marks. One spot was the worst which is what looks like where the problem started - nice little roasted spot. One brush was scored, the others were fine.
I cleaned the commutator up with sandpaper and the scored brush too. Reassembled. The noise is definitely still there but quieter.
However the motor is trashed. It will drive some, but won't develop full power anymore, or only intermittently so. And after a trip up the street I can smell some carbon.
I guess I get to purchase a new motor! Yay me!
I appreciate all the suggestions...

Anybody know a good place to get an Admiral (Red hawk) MOT-A1 motor?

It looks like the MOT-A1 motor is out of stock at Revolution and at Carts Unlimited.

You may want to call either David or Scotty to find out what might be available and when. Hate to see you being down for any length of time.

Check out EMP Motors and see if they have a similar motor design in stock. Most cart places have been hit kinda hard lately with the recent spike in cart buying and upgrading. (that stimlus check)

EMP does rebuilds and power rewinds on most motors, and can likely replace the armature in yours as well, but a new armature is usually about half the price of a new motor.
