Yamaha G2 Steering Problem

Hello All, I have a G2 that is having a tough time steering. Here is the history; Son rolled the cart bending the steering column. He is ok (thankfully) but the steering shaft inside the column broke. I replaced the bearings, and steering shaft. But when I put everything together the steering seems to "bind" from time to time. I tried to tighten the main take up bolt (large die cast bolt) but it seemed to bottom out. Can anyone tell me what I'm missing? None of the steering arms, tie rods are bent. The accident was at a slow speed, just tipping the cart over onto the steering.

All I know is how to adjust them properly. They usually wear in the center so they are more loose there. So when you tighten up the gear with the adjuster you need to turn the steering all the way lock to lock and make sure it does not bind while turned. It may still have a little play in the center (straight) but that is how they are. If its the column yet I don't know. If you get it too tight they don't like to turn back to straight after you turn a corner.

Jr, I think your adjusting the wrong adjuster. that big nut at the end of the shaft sets the end play (up and down) movement. There is a jamb nut and screw in the cover plate of the steering box, That is the one you need to adjust to take up the looseness for the pitman shaft. Then like Sho said.

Right, I've never had to mess with the other one only the nut/screw. They are similar to a Ford truck box that I have rebuilt, though all boxes like that seem to be similar. If the bearing on the pitman shaft is not perfect it will never work right I can tell you that, tolerance in there is crucial.

Well I think I figured out where I went wrong. It appears that the big nut at the end of the shaft that takes up the play is damaged. Not the nut, but the threads on the steering box housing. The big nut will only go in so far, so I thought maybe the nut was bad, no such luck. Whats worse yet is Yamaha is telling me this housing is no longer available. Does anyone have a used steering box that needs a good home?
