How old are the crank seals? Having to run it with the choke pulled is a good indication they are leaking. Welcome to the site!

Check and see if there is any oil leaking behind the clutch or below the flywheel. It could be minor and look like a build up of oily sludge or dampness. This is a common problem with these motors.

My G1 took a while to start with the choke all the way out. It would run ok after it warmed up without using the choke. I decided to go ahead and have the seals replaced and now it starts right up.

Here is a web page of mine that I made with plenty of pics to maybe help you figure out how to replace the oil seal on the clutch side, sorry the other side of my engine was good so I didn't take any pics of that. Hope this helps.
