I'm a dummy, battery checking question
Ok, so I'm a dumb*ss . Can you please tell me what I am doing wrong? I am trying to check my pack voltage and when I touch my DMM to first and last terminals I get an "OL" (open line) reading.
Each individual batt gives me a reading between 12.5 and 12.7, and when I try various combinations of batts I can get readings of 25.x (two batts) and 37.x (3 batts). But what am I doing wrong that I can't get a reading for all 4? Pic shows the terminals that give me the "OL" reading, red circle Pos, white circle Neg probes. Oh, it's a 12v system (obviously). And I did try a search on here but could not find an answer. Thanks all! |

Re: I'm a dummy, battery checking question
maybe you need to change the setting on the DVM to 200vdc or something like that, it has to be set higher than volts your trying to test

Re: I'm a dummy, battery checking question
That's it. The OL is overload. I suspect that your meter is set to 50 volts and four fully charged 12 volt batteries are a tad over 50 volts.

Re: I'm a dummy, battery checking question
Thanks, I didn't try that. But my meter is 'supposed' to be auto-ranging?
Yup, just realized that OL (open loop) is for resistance, not voltage (duh on me). Thank you, I thought it would be something simple. I'm obviously no electrician! Will check tonight and post results! |

Most auto range meters have a manual mode too - for the times when you want to over ride the automatic stuff.

Re: I'm a dummy, battery checking question
Yup, that was it. Thanks everybody.
Like I said, I'm no electrician, but one would logically think that the setting with two digits to the left of the decimal would go up to '99'. Go figure |
