Re: 1970 D crank bearing help please
topcat's advice sounds good to me but you need to make a compression check when it is reassembled. Sounds like your compression is low should be 80 to 95 PSI. It might run as low as 65PSI then only in reverse due to reverse faster cranking speed but not forward.

Re: 1970 D crank bearing help please
I checked it several years ago, and from what I remember it seemed fairly normal. But I will for sure check it again when I get the motor back together.
I'll let you know what numbers I have. |

Re: 1970 D crank bearing help please
Thank you top-cat for getting the parts to me so fast
I'm going to replace all of the gaskets and screws and I have a couple of questions. Should I use gasket sealant on the crankcase gasket, and should I use blue thread thread locker on the crankcase screws? Thanks again for your help. |

Re: 1970 D crank bearing help please
I sometimes use a sealant and sometimes no. I have used Permatex Aviation form a gasket only (stems from my early VW days). Just use the gaskets and no loctite, it still works.
If the cases look too rough to seal use the Permatex ( please no silicone). |

Re: 1970 D crank bearing help please
Ok, I got the motor put back together and back in the cart.
I tried starting it up and it wouldn't fire, just turns over. It wasn't getting any fuel. I read on here that the fuel works off of vacuum, so I started checking for any leaks and I found that just below the cylinder head is blowing air out as the motor turns over. I have replaced the head gasket with a new one, i have tried the old one, I have tried using both of them together. It is blowing less air out with the 2 gaskets on, but I can still feel it. I can't say for certain that it wasn't happening before I took the motor apart, but the cart was running great in reverse and was running in forward with the choke. Anyone have any idea what I can do to resolve this issue? |

Re: 1970 D crank bearing help please
check your head for nicks (the head too) The head gasket should be thin aluminum. I have cut gaskets out of a soft drink (beer) can. Be sure the head bolts are the right length and are not stripped in the case or on the bolt. lack of compression is, at least, part of the problem.

Re: 1970 D crank bearing help please
So I used some gasket sealant on the head gasket. The leak has stopped. I checked my compression and it is 90 in forward and reverse. The only way I can get it to run in forward or reverse is by using the choke now. Just a lot of bucking and stumbling.

Re: 1970 D crank bearing help please
Then you probably have a timing issue. check the forum search for timing procedure. You should fix the head problem and not patch it. It might give problems later.

Ok, thanks again for all of your help.
I'll work on the timing tomorrow and see how it goes. |
