36V Power Wise 28115 G04 charging 42v pack
Long time lurker, first time poster. I have searched and searched (this site and others), and have not been able to find the answers I'm looking for.
Here's the backstory: I am purchasing the SR 500/400 with heavy duty f/r switch from scottyb for my father-in-law's cart, a 2004 EZ-GO TXT that is currently 36v. He wants better accel and ability to maintain speeds better up hills. While I'm doing upgrades, I figured I would add in the extra battery to bump it to 42v for a little more top end. What I am trying to find out is if the Power Wise (Textron) charger can be modified to charge the new 42v pack or not. The charger is a model 28115 Go4 with a serial number of 360835 (pic attached), and it works like a champ right now. I know from research that the final charge voltage of that charger can be as high as 44v. So here's the bottom line: Does anyone have experience charging a 42v pack w/ this charger, and/or are there mods that can be performed on this charger to make it suitable? Thanks for any input you may have. |

44 really isn’t high enough voltage to charge a 42 volt pack. Needs to be in the low 50s I believe.

Re: 36V Power Wise 28115 G04 charging 42v pack
The PW 28115 can go higher than 46V, but I don't know how much and there is no way to measure the max voltage except when it is attached to a load.
The amps out determines the max output via transformer core saturation and the amp flow would probably need to be in the 5A to 8A range to get max output voltage. ----------- You could try bypassing the relay on the control board so the charger stays on whenever it is plugged into AC power and measure what the 42V pack's voltage is tomorrow. ------------ A different size (Farad value) capacitor might up the transformers boosted voltage. |

BTW: You need about 52V for absorption charge and about 57V for the Finnish charge.

Thank you for the input! Looks like I will keep it 36V for now until he is ready to buy a new charger. He can continue to be jealous of my club car precedent lol.

Re: 36V Power Wise 28115 G04 charging 42v pack
He probably doesn't want to do this, but if you are talking about a somewhat temporary arrangement he can switch the cables when he charges it and still use the 36 volt charger. Then charge the orphan battery with a 6 volt charger.
I have done it a number of times with my 42 volt cart when I was having trouble with the new charger, and I've had a whole lot of trouble with it. It is something of a hassle, but it actually doesn't take more than about 2 minutes each time to switch the cables. This is just an idea if he is really serious about wanting to go to 42 and plans to buy the new charger soon. |
