Help with crank and balancer spacers
I'm rebuilding my father-in-laws 1993 ez go marathon 295 engine. When I disassembled the engine it didn't have any spacers on the crankshaft or balancer shaft so I don't have any to see what I'm looking for. I took the measurement like the manual recommended. For the crankshaft I got a measurement of .041 and for the balancer shaft I got a measurement of .053. It says the measurement should be between .003 and .015. Now in the parts list it shows the smaller spacer for the balancer is .8 and for the crank .6. That's bigger than what my gaps are. How can it be in between the recommended measurements yet they don't sell any different size spacers? Is that the reason there weren't any installed to begin with? Should I make some or just leave them off?
Thanks for any help! |

Re: Help with crank and balancer spacers
Since the engine I'm rebuilding doesn't have spacers I'm not sure how they fit on there. I might go ahead a make some or have some made. Can someone let me know kind of how they're sized and fit? Do they fit on the shafts tight so they spin with the shaft and bearing? Is the outside diameter the same size as the diameter of the center race of the bearing? If someone has access to a spacer would you mind giving me the outside and inside diameters? I really just need the measurements of one because I could then figure the other one out. If anyone has one laying around to measure I'd sure appreciate it!
Thanks. |

Re: Help with crank and balancer spacers
Dear MarineGrunt:
I attached a picture of what I think you want. The spacers are just very smooth washers, fairly loose fit on the shafts. See attached picture. In the picture, I pulled the spacers a little from the gear faces since the oil tends to make them stick to the faces and be sort of invisible. My washers have a coppery finish, but attract to a magnet. One on each shaft. Measurements for the crank spacer: OD: 1.773 inch, ID ~ 1.395", thickness: 0.039" Measurements for the Balancer: OD: 1.105 inch, ID: ~ 0.805" , thickness: 0.047" Note that the ID was measured with a vernier caliper, which will be a little rough on the ID accuracy. However, it sounds like my spacers would fit your engine about perfectly, so I bet they tend generally be about the same, although I haven't measured my fit-up. Personally, I would hesitate to assemble the engine knowing it would be loose. I expect the effect could be a little rattle (especially the crank), and faster seal wear since the shaft would translate back and forth more than normal. The crank to balancer shaft gears appear to be wide enough, but I suppose there could eventually (like a hundred years) be uneven wear due to incomplete lateral mesh. Probably better to be too loose than too tight. Hope the picture and measurements help, the rest is just conjecture. Ted |
