air intake
I made a 3 inch lift for my 88 marathon and now the intake hose is bent almost closed. Can I change the intake system on a 2 stroke? I ask because on the plastic funnel shaped piece that connects to the air filter cannister, it says that modifying the system could cause engine damage. I know that there are a lot of lifted marathons, so what do you do?

Re: air intake
That warning pertains to freeing up the air intake and
the engine running lean and burning the piston. If done with care and for thought it can be done. WATCH THE COLOR OF THE PLUG. |

Re: air intake
For now I have adapted a small cylinder shaped filter from a tecumseh lawn mower engine. So, what you are saying is, dont let it suck too much air? It runs fine with the small filter which only has about a 1 inch opening for the air to enter. I hope some one who has changed there filter will give some input.

Re: air intake
EZ RIDER, on my 87 the bottom piece of the air cleaner is aluminum. It goes down from the base then takes a 90 degree turn toward the motor. After a few inches it takes a 45 degree bend slightly upwards.I took the cleaner apart and cut the tube off just before the 45with a chopsaw. The hose now runs from the carb to the aluminum tube at a slight downward angle. The oem hose fit onto the cutoff point fine.Hope this helps.

Re: air intake
I did find a way to use the stock system by relocating it. All I will need is a short piece of 1 inch ID hose. I may end up doing like you did yours so I can remount it in the stock location. Thanks for the input.

Re: air intake
Not to hijack your thread but I will be lifting my 86 next week. I hadn't thought about disconnecting the air cleaner hose and I guess that I probably would have damaged it. Thanks for your question EZ RIDER and thanks for the great answer Brush Creek.

Re: air intake
I fixed mine by going to Auto Parts store and buying an aftermarket 4 inch carb style cleaner and mounted it strait to the carb.
The carb air intake diameter is 2.5 inches so I found an air cleaner to sit right on there. Love how it looks more like a hotrod setup. Part cost me less than $15 for the fix. |
