steering column components... damaged?
so I couldn't get my steering wheel off and ended up removing the entire column from the cart and the existing steering wheel down to the hub (1998 CC). It may have been hit with a large rubber mallet a couple times and even a few swings with a hammer trying to get the stupid thing off. What damage could I have done to the assembly inside? I didn't bugger up the threads at all and it still rotates and the silly hub is still on but I remember reading somewhere that the shaft can come apart...? Are there a million springs and washers and bearings inside the column? I am debating taking the whole thing apart to make sure it is in good shape still. Don't want to be going 30mph and have a steering shaft separate.
One more thing... how do I get that hub off? Physically cut it with a dremel (read that in a previous post)? Anyone got one of those IDIDIT tilt steering columns? Pricey things they are! |

Hey have you tried calling your local CC dealer to see if they will loan or rent you a
steering wheel puller ? It may be worth a shot. |

Re: steering column components... damaged?
Oh DUHHHHhhhh.....Late model....dealer sells a puller for about $160
If you are willing to destroy it you can cut it with a dremil or? and insert a shim to spread it...I have one right now I am slowly desolving the rust with PB Blaster...I wrapped a little strip of cotton cloth around the nut and each time I walk by I spray it ...In another week I hope to pop it off? I will let you all know if this method works. |

Put the nut back on....not all the way, just enough for when you whack it with a hammer you don't bugger up the threads. Get both knees up under the wheel, push up with your knees while whackin the nut. It's not gonna be easy. If you can get it to move just a little you'll have it whooped. Hope that helps.....it did me.

Re: steering column components... damaged?
yup, that's exactly what I did, buggered up the bolt hitting it with a rather large hammer with the hub in a vice... need a new bolt now. Still won't budge!
Looks like I'm getting the dremel out. |

Re: steering column components... damaged?
Hey just offering up a suggestion here , may times it does not matter which way it
budges as long as it moves. A adjustable impact wrench turn the air up and let it slam forward on the bolt for awhile, then remove bolt and try pulling again. I have had a lot of success with this on things which also require a puller :) |

Re: steering column components... damaged?
thanks for the replies. Looks like I'm getting out the separating discs. I couldn't find anywhere to buy a club car replacement steering column assembly in case I really botch it up.
