Default 1990 3pg.... stumped

Hi all I'm new to this forum, little back ground on myself. I have a good mechanical back ground, I was a bodyman for 7 years when I was younger and have spent most my life turning wrenches. I'm big into power boating and used to do a lot of car work. I just purchased a 1990 ezgo marathon. The man I got it off told me he could not get it to run, he tossed a new carb on it and gave up, he believed it needed rings. Upon getting it home I check compression and it produced 120psi,after that concerned it had spark. I got her fire up. I can not get it to run right. It seams to smoke a lot! List of things I have done.

Compression check =120psi
BBQ the muffler
Covered to HEI ignition
New gas. Mix 1oz oil per gallon
Adj the card from 0 turns to 3 out= no change from one other... at all!
New chinies carb.... gonna try a 3rd right now
On idle sprayed staring fluid around crank seals... no issue found
Diconected fuel line aturned it over... got a good spray

It's real hard starting once I get it to start takes peddle work to get the church to engage. Most times I can walk faster than it will run. Sean real rich to me plug is a dark brown.

Any ideas?

Since you did the HEI conversion, try switching the red, and blue wires.

I always like to blame crankshaft seals no matter what.

Is it possible that somebody rebuilt the engine before you? Piston could be in backwards.

It was rebuilt befor me.... and that's a good thought!! The man I bought it from rebuilt the top end, he made it seem it ran good for a few years after the rebuild...but that may be my next move

Well 3rd carb did nothing.... I really don't want to tear down an engine with 120 compression...but looks my options are limited

Just a thought, but I've had 2-strokes w bad mufflers in the past that were plugged up and a BBQ didn't help because they were too far gone - try cracking the exhaust bolts 1/4" and see if it runs any better without exhaust restriction (YES, it will be really REALLY loud) ... As to the China Carbs, I've had as good of luck with them as with OEM so I can't see You getting 3 bad ones ... Timing could also be off, that's common if whomever rebuilt it didn't tighten the pulsar enough to where it loosened up and moved (the good news is that's an easy fix and only requires flywheel removal which You can do right in the cart)

Did you switch the red, and blue pulsar wires?

Did you remove the exhaust to check the piston? Move it up, and down. if you can see square ports from the exhaust port, it's in backwards.

Update.... I took the motor out, the case had about a 1/2 cup of gas in it. The square ports on the piston were faceing the carb side. Yes I filipped the wires .... did nothing.

I'm going to pop the head hear in a few min

Wow, that sounds catastrophic. What did you find in there?

The blue bar up top says site sponsors. Shop around there.
