Need help: Drum won't go back on
Ok, so I get that the only real cause is interference from the shoe(s), but I can't see anything making contact. If I'm understanding things correctly, I have the adjuster screwed all the way in and everything is in place correctly but it won't go on very far.
The passenger side slid right on. This one won't. I know it's not a problem with the splines; I can flip the drum and it'll slide right on. And when putting in on correctly, I feel the physical 'stop' when it makes contact with... something. Can someone look at my pics and see if I'm missing something obvious? TIA! Where the drum stops |

I don't know the answer to this, so I will just throw it out there.
Are all of the shoes identical to each other, or is one of them supposed to be a hair shorter than the other? Since the other side worked ok, maybe you could measure them for a reference. |

http://products.jacobsen.com/img/manuals/605586.pdflps.
Brakes start on page 147 of this manual. Page 150 shows a clear picture of how brake shoes go. I don't think there is a short shoe like auto and truck brakes which always goes to front. I looked at one that the drums were off today in my shop and they look the same. Your brake shoes do look thick. Can you check the one that won't go on to the other one and see if one is thicker than the other ? Where did you buy these shoes ? Other than that it looks like you got everything right. I have a shoe grinder at my shop so I know what I would do. Not many of those still left. |

Try sliding one or both of the shoes up or down so you have equal spacing around the perimeter of the back plate

Re: Need help: Drum won't go back on
The shoes are all the same, none are smaller than the others.
Where the drum is stopping is roughly where the outside of the shoe is contacting the drum. The assembled shoes will slide side to side; provided the adjuster is in far enough, it should be a matter of shifting the shoe assembly into its proper alignment for the drum to slip on. I would suggest snugging up the shoes with the adjusters prior to putting the wheels back on. Mine seemed reluctant to self-adjust. |

Start at page 148. Read through the text. Check your springs (hook) directions.

Re: Need help: Drum won't go back on
Could it be the drum itself? I only ask because I had a similar problem with a car I worked on. It turned out to be a lip on the drum itself. An easy way to check is to swap drums from the other side. At least you would eliminate it being the drum.

The strange thing is, the shoes that were on it weren't worn that much - glazed, yes - but were similar in thickness to the new ones. I'm just surprised to meet this resistance. |
