Battery cable and connector extreme hot and melt
I have the 1998 EZgo golf cart. I can't figure out how the battery wiring work. The previous owner did it for me. I was driving this weekend and smell some thing like cable burning. So I removed the seat and found out the middle battery terminal extremely hot and melted. It also burned the yellow cable that cross over as well. I am not sure why the yellow cable connect to the battery in the middle.
Can some one tell me what happen? Do I need to change the battery? Here is the images: Thank You! James |

Re: Battery cable and connector extreme hot and melt
Welcome to BGW
Thats probly from a bad connection. Your going to have to repair it, make sure ALL the connections are goood and see if any are getting warm. Cables WILL get loose and need to be checked at least once a month. You can repair that terminal. Don't bother trying to re-use it. How to repair melted battery terminals No idea what that yellow wire is but it needs some slack. You could strum a tune on that thing. |

Re: Battery cable and connector extreme hot and melt
Thanks for your advice! I am not sure if I have all the tool to finish this but I will give it a try. I will get the new battery if I can't do it.
Thanks again. |

Re: Battery cable and connector extreme hot and melt
Theres nothing wrong with the battery if you can fix it. You should be able to get all those tools and the stud at a hardware store for under $20. I started to make a kit but the cost is to high for "good" tools...ie: Drill bit and tap.

Re: Battery cable and connector extreme hot and melt
I am a novice with these carts as well, but I followed those directions exactly and it worked great no issues. I have even fixed others carts with no issue now. Much cheaper to fix it then to buy a new battery.

Re: Battery cable and connector extreme hot and melt
YES! In fact, I would replace ALL the 6g cables with PROPERLY MADE 4g WELDING CABLES. The rust on all the existing red cables is not good and they will continue to corrode and cause problems. Someone threw a bunch of $3 cables on that cart.

Re: Battery cable and connector extreme hot and melt
Yes. If those are those cheap walmart cables they aren't worth a crap. A set of battery cables for that cart aren't that much. At least replace the one. Once those ends get hot like that they'll never be good again. The same problem will pop up again.

Looks like the yellow wire rubbed on battery term. Shorted out. Looks like inline fuse holder going to lights, etc.? Was the melted battery connection a negative side of the battery?

Re: Battery cable and connector extreme hot and melt
Could that yellow fused wire have been any tighter running accross the battery banks? Geeeeezzz! Al ittle slack in the line and a few tie wraps wouldn't have been that much $$
