Pre-charge resistor for resistor carts?
From Alltrax Tech Note 010
Pre-Charge Resistor: The resistor, typically seen across the big terminals on the contactor, pre-charges the filter capacitors in the controller. This minimizes the voltage across the contactor to reduce arcing on the contacts as they close. Closing the contactor without a pre-charge resistor causes arcing on the contact surface and they can become pitted. Question: Is a pre-charge resistor necessary or helpful (for contact life) for resistor carts? |

Re: Pre-charge resistor for resistor carts?
I have a 1995 ezgo DCS. The speed controller went bad. I replaced it, it works except the precharge resistor gets insanely hot after about 30 seconds of use. Any ideas?

Re: Pre-charge resistor for resistor carts?
I know I need it. Was just curious if someone knew why it got so hot. Someone said it might be the motor cables rubbing against the frame and causing resistance. But I checked them, rather the mobile golf cart repair guy did, and they look good.

Re: Pre-charge resistor for resistor carts?
PG is right. There is no pre charge resistor on resistor carts. If you upgrade to a controller, yes you need one for cheap insurance on your electric system.
