1984 EZ GO Marathon Total Reconstruct

Hello all as you can see I am new to this site but I have been going over many threads the last few days, Wow Very Cool Stuff going on here. Okay well here is the low down: The Shop is all cleaned out the stove is stoked and the wrenches are coming out. I have an 84 gasser I’m putting a 20hp Kohler into. I also have an 89 ez go 4stroke I am using for donor parts, Trans /rear end etc. My son and I are just starting this project so pictures will be coming. I welcome any comments and or suggestions, like I said earlier this is our virgin voyage in the cart thing. One of my first questions to anyone do you know if the front end on the 89 will fit on the 84? Oh and the reason using the 84 as the running gear it is in much better shape and all is there, 89 has been damaged in the middle frame area, I don’t think it is worth fixing. I also wonder how hard it would be to put a 94 or newer body on the front end. Okay I guess that’s enough questions for now. I’ll be waiting with baited breath for all your knowledge. Thank You

I believe to to front axles are the same, If not I would think you could unbolt the springs from the 89 frame axle and all, then bolt them to the 84. If the from cowling is good on the 89 you might be able to put it on the 84 and make it look updated. Also when doing your swap, Take the whole rear swingarm, engine and transaxle from the 89 and put that under the 84, seems like that would be easier than unbolting individual parts and putting them on the 84 as you will need the transaxle from the 89 if you want reverse

the front springs from the 89 are going to be about 2" longer than those on the 84, but the good news is if you're going to do a lift, it's a common swap for guys to use 88-up springs on pre-88's as it moves the axle forward a bit and gives you a bit more clearance. The cowl, I believe is a direct bolt-on swap (however you'll be doing a ton of fabbing if you try and go with a newer plastic cowl).

I have a question about drive clutch, it seems the belt rides pretty high on the drive clutch wall and will not let the motor idle when in gear, and wants to pull the driven clutch in turn it kills engine.
I'm wondering there is about 1/4" of clutch shaft showing on the outside of the clutch like it wont open all the way is this normal or do I have a problem with the clutch? seems if it will open all the way the belt would fall to the shaft and not be pinched so the belt will not turn. any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

It has been a long three years, a few life changing moments along the way but we are getting close to finishing this project here are some pictures of what we did.
we built a new motor cradle added F-R transmission big blocked it (18 hp vanguard) and built our own lift.
also notice the custom header and true working side pipes with flame thrower added out of both pipes (pic's to come of that. prob after paint is finished)

Finely seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. no just kidding its me coming with the flame throwers on.
Almost done with my baby just a couple more upgrades and she is all done (for now).
