That sure sounds like a blown head gasket or possibly a holed piston (did that on a 1988 once, same deal, ran like crap for a little bit then just died once the hole became large enough) ... To be totally sure before tearing into the top end, do a compression check. With the holed piston, mine actually still had about 48lbs but You're looking at needing a minimum of about 90 to run correctly. A full top end kit (rings, piston, wrist pin, cylinder, and all gaskets) will run You about $125-150 and especially with a 34 year old cart is a much better idea than trying to throw one thing at a time at the cart IE gasket, etc. The good news is that it's about an hours job to pull the motor and install the new top end, figure a max of 2hrs to have her running like a new motor!

No prob, and trust me - it's literally maybe another 15-20 min worth of time and labor to do the entire top end than just do gaskets - plus it requires almost no skill. If You know "Righty Tighty" You can seriously do it yourself with a little guidance (which coincidentally, is why most of us on this forum are here) ...

Grab a compression tester and confirm (any good auto parts store will loan You one, You may have to give a deposit but it'll obviously be returned) - if You can install a spark plug, You can run a compression test.

I say pull the motor, do a top end, BBQ the muffler and rebuild/clean the carb, and crank seals then put it back together and drop it in. Bypass the injector pump andnmix your own and enjoy your new power and your cart for quite a few years

sounds awfully loud for a crank seal, Cowboy - although the above advice is also good - may as well do the seals while You have it apart as well as the carb and the muffler. The upside is the muffler BBQ is free (as well as a great excuse to have a few beers around the fire) and pulling the carb apart to do a thorough cleaning is also a no-cost task ... The seals will require that you pull the clutch as well as the flywheel (which can be quite frustrating) but it's easier to spend the $12 and time to do them now as versus 2 weeks after the rebuild (been there done that)

Agreed.... It just sounded like that familiar "chuff chuff" sound. Any excuse to drink beer is a good one lol

Finding another head shouldn't be a problem. Least if thats all you do you can do it with the engine in the cart.
