easiest way to work on 85 Engine?
Long post... sorry
I just got my first gas cart, an 85 G1 running. Rebuilt top end, changed crank seals, and general cleaning did the job. I was able to do everything with body flipped up and engine in cradle. Now I have an 85 marathon that runs but is hard to get moving (starter turns over but doesn't fire up right away and when it does it is super sluggish and stops after about 25 yards). Compression was around 110 in F&R. Undid muffler and no change. I am going to check crank seals next by spraying carb cleaner down near crank. Question is, how do you remove the engine because there is no way I can work on it while in the cart. I am sure you undo belt from clutches and maybe a few bolts...any good tricks I should know? |

Yes, you undo the belts. Unhook the battery, remove the S/G and lay it forward over the body onto the floor of the cart. Remove the fuel, choke, and throttle lines and cables. Also remove the ground strap and don't forget the air cleaner inlet. Remove the wires that trigger ignition, and the spark plug wire. Exhaust can stay, it's all bolted to the engine. The bolts on the drivers side that hold the engine in thread into special head bolts, and the ones on the passenger side bolt into the case of the motor. Lifting it out isnt bad, the thing is just awkward, not too heavy.
Once it is out, check the orientation of the piston by looking through the exhaust port. You can spin the engine by hand with the clutch to make sure you can only see the blank side of the piston skirt, and not the port. If you see the port, you're gonna need to flip that piston. |

Just a couple times, but it sticks with you once you've done it.
I think there are 6 total, 3 on each side. I do it all from the top side. |
