so I took the pump off and cycled the motor. I feel the pulsating but when i plug the hole with my finger it doesn't blow my finger away or anything like that

Yes, it has to come out. You would also have to remove the clutch, and flywheel. That would require specialty pullers.

I wouldn't jump into anything until 89 Marathon, and a few other guys come along to give their opinions. You have to ask yourself if you have the tools, and the skills to go deeper into this.
