Default G16 - no spark/intermittent

Ok, been having a weird issue with my son's G16. Occasionally it will take a few seconds to start (Starter generator is turning but engine doesn't start). Sometimes it starts right away.

I figured maybe just a carb/fuel issue.. However over the weekend, it happened a few times and took an extended amount of time to start.. Once I could not get it to start for a few minutes. I started checking and could not get spark (tried two spark plugs).

I came back to it about 10 minutes later and it started right up.

Intermittent spark issue? Things to check?

Thanks!

Unplug the 2-wire plug at the front bottom of the engine. (It has blue and black wires). You should always have spark now. If you still experience spark issues, the coil is bad. Do not buy an aftermarket coil, 25% of them don't work out of the box, 75% fail within 6 months. The odds aren't in your favor, depends how much you yalue your time (changing parts & chasing down a refund).

Thanks.. When the issue happens again I will try that. I do have a parts cart with a known good system so I can rob parts if necessary.

Just as an update, yesterday I finally got a chance to swap out the coil with a known good one. Set gap at .016 ( I believe specs are .012-.020 ).

Started right up. Seems to start faster where previously the S/G would have to roll the motor more to get it to start.. Also ran it around the neighborhood and all seems ok. Time will tell.

Thanks!

Can you run it all the time with the wires disconnected? I have no spark with them connect but as soon as I unplug I have great spark. 1999 Yamaha G16

That tells you the coil is fine and your problem is in the engine kill circuit: Stop switch, ignition switch or wiring issues in between them.
