How to check compression out of cart
Hello All,
I have a bunch of Yamaha 4 stroke engines and parts. I'd like to figure out how to test compression on the engines while not in a cart. Would it be viable to use a drill to spin the engine to test compression? I don't want to pull the engines apart if the compression is good. Also, is eBay a good place to sell the stuff I'm not going to use? Ideas, comments appreciated. -randyb |

Re: How to check compression out of cart
most likely a drill will not rotate the engine. If it does the compression is low.
A GOOD impact gun will do. I don't know what the compression should be on a Yamaha, My Ezgo 4 stroke was 175-180 after I built it. |

Re: How to check compression out of cart
not sure about other Yamahas but the g1 has an engine cradle that you can pull out the exhaust, starter/gen and the engine at the same time. So ive been able to swap out the engine off the cradle and hook up the starter belt and do the testing. Ive also done this while having the whole harness removed and assembly on the bench.

Re: How to check compression out of cart
You can turn them by hand and if the compression is gone in a matter of seconds, its worn. If fresh you can hold the crank against it for a bit.
I have done that with a BIG electric drill, clamp the engine to something and spin it over with drill. Can give you an idea anyway, but its not easy to do. Otherwise rig up a gen or motor to turn it and clamp it down, use a belt to spin it, except you would need a clutch on it so you had a pulley. I have 2 G9 that ran, should rebuild and sell or just get rid of them at some point lol. |
