Default Plastic barrel and head cover

The plastic cover around the cylinder barrel and over the top of the head and spark plug.

Who leaves them on? Who leaves them off and why?

If you are referring to parts of the shrouding those parts are there to force cooling air around the cylinder and head. Removing them would drastically reduce engine cooling efficiency.

yea you'll melt one down in no time without them.

That being said I wonder why more air cooled engines did use this method? Yamaha has been using it since the 70's that I can tell on both carts and sleds.

After looking at my Honda Oddyessy Fl250 project I wonder why Honda didn't use something like this, and on a motor know for over heating.

Equipment like carts need shrouding because they are either stationary like generators, or the engine isn't in a decent airstream like carts. The FL250 could have benefitted because they can be driven pretty slow too.

Thanks folks. I was asking because I see lots of pictures of the engines on this forum but, I almost never see one with the shrouds in place.

Some engines have shrouds and some don't. It's all in the original engineering. One thing for sure is that if an engine was engineered to have a shroud then you want to make sure it's there.

I almost never see an engine on here without a shroud. Unless it is in some state of repair requiring removal of the shroud.

Or if it's a clone swap, which would not have come with shrouds but certainly could benefit!

Clone engines come with shrouds albeit sometimes marginal shrouding. They are primarily designed to replace powerplants on stationary or slow moving equipment which still requires some shrouding.
