1989 ezgo muffler repair
Is there a way to repair the muffler on a 1989 ezgo gas golf cart? My engine is very loud but the cheapest I have found a new muffler is on Ebay for $500.

If you have the fab skills it shouldn't be hard but I would look around for a cheaper muffler or even one that can be converted.

They don't have any packing in them, just a baffle-tube.Just weld it up,however it needs to be repaired.I've made new end-caps,outlet-pipes,etc..Its' a good time to upgrade the outlet to a larger pipe as well.

Would making the outlet pipe bigger make the muffler louder?

Re: 1989 ezgo muffler repair
Does anyone know of a cheaper muffler that can be modified and/or converted to use on the 1989 EZGO? Would I be able to use any muffler from an EZGO 244cc engine regardless of the year by simply changing the inlet and outlet pipes?

I would say yes. With some fab can't see any problems believe that's the route I would go but I have a welding shop.

Yes,making the outlet bigger will make it louder, but also give more power(less back-pressure).Don't use a packed-muffler if you upgrade,it will clog from the oil.

Re: 1989 ezgo muffler repair
Thanks for the replies. This 2 cycle muffler is a puzzler. The muffler I have on my 1989 EZGO seems to be in pretty good shape. It does not rattle when I shake it so I'm guessing that it is pretty intact inside. Should I bbq it to remove any plugging of the baffles inside? Can a 2 cycle golf cart be as quiet as a 4 cycle and still have enough power to work properly?

Re: 1989 ezgo muffler repair
BBQ wouldn't hurt a thing and will give you the opportunity to replace any faulty exhaust gaskets and check the gasket surfaces (ARE THEY FLAT) the exhaust may be leaking there. It almost sounds like that may be your problem.
