My 1982 J17 will not run...
Hey Gang!
I need some help with a 1982 Yamaha G1 Engine diagnosis. I've tried everything I can think of to get this thing to run and I have had no luck! Compression check shows 120-125, there's good spark, and the carburetor has been thoroughly cleaned. Fuel pump is delivering fuel, and from time to time I get plumes of exhaust. Intake reeds seem to seal properly. I also own a couple parts carts (j24's), as well as a couple mid 1980's EZGO's (1 gas, 1 electric). I'm stumped with this one. Any assistance would be appreciated. Thank you! |

Re: My 1982 J17 will not run...
Hey 86G1monster!
I've checked the exhaust as much as I'm able. It appears to be clear since from time to time a sizeable burst will come out the tailpipe. I bought all of my carts from different places over the last couple years. I've never had any of the three G1's running. A muffler BBQ might just be in my future so that I can definitively rule that out. Thanks for the suggestion! |

it sounds like the engine is turning over against itself. May sure you have the battery cables on the right battery terminals meaning that positive and negative are on their proper terminals.

Re: My 1982 J17 will not run...
Hey Chompy!
Anything is possible. Just to be sure, which should run where? Right now, the positive lead is running to the starter and the negative is running to the solenoids. Is this correct? Complete newbie to these carts here and not much of a mechanic! Thanks! |

Re: My 1982 J17 will not run...
That sounds correct. Now make sure the white / red and white/ green wires from the cdi to the engine did not get switched around for any reason.

My G2 was doing something very similar. It turns out it was the negative post on the starter/generator. It had broken internally.
