What else do I need for my 5.5hp motor?
Just picked up a used 5.5hp 4700rpm motor for $100 on CL.
Istalled in my 97 DS 48v (6"lift, 22" tires), it's much faster from stock 17 to 27mph. Happy with the speed but the torque is the same or maybe a little less than stock, also take off seems a tad slower. Everything else on the cart is stock. Question is, what do I need to get the most out of this motor? This cart is 80% on road and the rest of the time we're tooling around on hunting trails. Thanks. |

Re: What else do I need for my 5.5hp motor?
He has 6" lift & 22" tires..... Since you got such a great deal on the motor I would shop around and buy a used controler, not altrax from all the promblems it seems lots of people seem to have with them.... Make your own cables, you can buy 2gage welding cable pretty cheap if you shop around and theres a video on youtube on how to solder the terminal ends on..... I bet you could do everything for 500 or 600 and maybe cheaper

Ok,
Went out back to the money tree, Ordered 2ga wires, HD Solenoid and HD FR switch. Gonna see how it does before plunging into a 500a controller. Keep you posted. |

Re: What else do I need for my 5.5hp motor?
5.5hp? Is it a ge d380?
At minimum you will need a 400a controller. I bet you can fry an egg on the stock controller after a run. You can pick up an alltrax for a few hundred bucks several of the site sponsors have them. I had a 99 DS. 5.5 HP motor 2 GA cables etc etc. When I had the stock controller I could not go through the woods for more than about 20 mins before thermal shutdown occurred. You couldn't even touch the controller. After I upgraded it alllll went away. Save yourself the trouble.... I was fine going through the neighborhood at WOT. Its when you are creeping through the woods or wherever at half throttle when she starts to heat up.. |

Not sure on the type motor, i'll check. I haven't took it offroad yet just around the hood. I took a 3 mile ride to walmart yesterday non-stop at full speed and the controller was just warm (like you said), the wires were almost to hot to hold and the FR switch was the same. Still checking around for controllers. Hard to pick the right one. Don't want to make a $500 mistake. The GE manual tuning controllers look good. |
