Club Car PowerDrive 1 Drive System
Looking at purchasing a Club Car with the Powerdrive 1 (Regen 1) electronics. Anybody have any concerns with those electronics? I have heard it is bad but also heard that it is really good.

Re: Club Car PowerDrive 1 Drive System
I own one - so as a GOLF COURSE ONLY user I have been very satisfied and have owned it 12 years. In my experience; after 7 years in my possession (12 yrs of age) the controller failed and I had it repaired. Otherwise no failures! BUT - if you plan to upgrade (motor/controller/speed) or for off-roading in mud & slime - it may not be a good choice. Regen 1 or 2 upgrade parts are relatively hard to come by and can be fairly expensive IMHO.
Personally I like (and use) the Regen braking and hill brake features - but even a simple motor upgrade on my cart disables that. If I were buying a replacement; I would choose an IQ. Those are easier to upgrade and probably easier to maintain as an owner; since there's lots of them out there. The above answer also assumes you want Regen function - otherwise series carts are the simplest and have the most available in upgrades. Just to be sure, its fully OEM right? It has the following "original" parts? 1) Black Tee Shaped GE controller? 2) RED (not amber) Battery Light/OBC? 3) Potentiometer for the accel Pedal? |

It has the "T" shaped controller, red battery light, and pot box that looks like the vglide. I would keep the cart fully stock with no bigger tires, lift kit, etc... I too like the features of the regen braking and find myself using them a lot!

Joesam, you are truly an exception to Regen1 rule.... Congratulations.
CCFanatic... My honest opinion.... My best recommendation for the Regen1 cars is to fill the batteries up with gasoline and plug in the charger. (Not really, but that would eliminate the problem) |

I would not have posted that. Someone will do it. You're from the south. "Hey folks! Watch this!"
Good answer though. |

Re: Club Car PowerDrive 1 Drive System
Now Tahoe don't be mean. Remember that I am using the cart for exactly its design parameters so we shouldn't be surprised that it works. Plus as a private owner my cart has never been subjected to the rent-a-car wear and tear. I have taken decent care of my ride throughout its life. Truth be told my battery pack lasted 11 years (dog years because its stored for 1/2 of each year).
Its been so good and reliable that I'm actually buying batteries for it come spring. I looked at buying Precedent before I made that choice but with all the MCOR issues etc, decided against. However, for any application other than golf, I realize the limitations of this version. Don't get me wrong though. I still don't recommend it for the faint of heart. The risk at this stage of life for this short-lived design is too big for all but the most courageous. Hopefully that message came thru in my initial reply. |

TahoeDawg,
How much would it cost to convert to Regen2? |

Joesam I'm not being mean. Sorry if I came across that way. I truly want you to realize how lucky you are. When these cars were in their prime it was an absolute disaster. They've been known to randomly start running on their own for no apparent reason.

Re: Club Car PowerDrive 1 Drive System
AY CARUMBA, David! I've never heard of that before! As I began to learn about carts, I always assumed people avoided the Regen I because it was prone to failure, not HOMICIDAL! Now I'm going to be afraid to park near small children (or even those chipmunks that DaveTM was frying in his post yesterday).
Seriously though, I'm suddenly a bit nervous. This cart isn't exactly a "display model". I estimate we have been driving this cart (golfing) more than 500 miles/yr since 2002. Do you know the cause? Is there some seriously flawed component I should be inspecting, testing or replacing - to avoid killing furry woodland creatures? |
