also draws quite a vacuum on the down stroke.
????? You may want to take the rocker arm cover off and check things out.
Thinking about it maybe not.

put a teaspoon of oil in the spark plug hole. Rolled the engine for 25-30 seconds twice and reinstalled the plug. Added a shot of starter fluid. Nada.

What does moving the ground cable to the frame do? Besides the obvious.

You should have a ground cable from the battery to the motor and another, usually the same one with another lug that goes from the motor to the frame.

It gives the engine a direct ground to provide the best spark! It's sounding more and more like a timing issue to me(valves or flywheel). I would borrow a compression guage just so you can eliminate that for sure. Is the motor backfiring at all when you are turning it over?

It ensures that the ign system gets the proper ammount of grond to complete the electrical path adequately. Try it. If that doesn't work then you may be looking into tearing it apart to ensure the valve timing is correct, the keyway is not broken or off, the inductive pick up is adjusted and timed correctly. There just isn't much that it could be. Did your compression on your thumb increase with the oil?

ok...let me get this straight. I should have a ground wire/cable from the block to the frame. That, I do not have. I didn't take one off when i pulled the motor.

tell me more about the inductive pickup. Can that go bad. I did have an issue with it. Yesterday on one of the attempted startups, the ground wire on it, started to overheat and it actually burned through the insulation on the wire. What does the pickup do?

Put a ground wire from the engine to the frame. Even full size cars have these for a reason. Your ground wire on the pickup burned because all the electrical juice was trying to go thru it instead of a proper ground wire. You may need to replace the unit now. If you have a camera, take some pics of the issue and the engine area so we can get a better idea of what we are try to make suggestions on.

Mike or Dave where you guys at when we need you? LOL.
