No, if anything by itself it is lighter than the original setup. That said when we built it the design was for the original top to fit on top. With some notching it fits just fine and stays in place with Velcro. Don’t have any pictures of that.

Aluminum? If I do it, it would need to be steel, and afraid it would get heavy. I have no way of welding aluminum. They all look a bit tall to me, some even a bit hokey, but doing something with a marine fabric over the top, like the "T" tops on offshore fishing boats.

No it is steel. Not too heavy. I was able to carry it by myself with no problem. Not sure how aluminum would have survived the flip.
