Unhappy 1987? 2 Stroke Gets Hot , causes pre-ignition

I have a Ezgo 2 stroke I think 1986 with 3pg motor lays on its side , belts run side to side , First the car was not running when I got it , I installed the HEI conversion the car starts and drives great , good power and speed , the muffler gets hot and at that point the cart spits sputters and runs bad I’m sure is pre-ignition caused by over heating , I added oil to the gas to eliminate the issue of a faulty oil injector , adding the oil to gas did slow how fast it heats up but the exhaust heats up and it’s clear the engine is getting hot !

If the belt runs side to side then it's a 2pg, The 3pg didn't happen til mid 89. Make sure the ignition timing is set correctly and not to far advanced, too far advanced will make it run good but also make it run hot

It could also be a clogged muffler.

I will check the muffler , the flywheel has two raised areas that the pickup coil reads the pickup coil screws to a ring that can be turned to set advance or retard the pickup , I left it in the center position when I did the new pickup coil because I assumed the two raised line on the flywheel was forward and reverse timing so turning the ring at all would give the opposite results to reverse . Is there a position the cart would run better in without hurting reverse to bad ?
