Most likely the main reason for not using a more expensive metal is that the post on a battery is not intended as a current conductor, it is simply a fastening device used to promote the contact between the cable lug and the lead post surface.

Exactly, The battery steel stud & nut is a clamp mechanism which insures proper tension between the copper or aluminum cable lug and the lead post base

ok i'll play devils advocate .... what about the studs on the motor ? they clamp the cable between the nuts
