I as well was baffled by the math. all my connections are right. I do have my first positive and Last negative disconnected. I wanted to make sure that I did not have any drain on the batteries while I was charging as I can not get a full charge.

If you're still using a stock charger it will not work if the main negative is disconnected. Also hook a meter to the main negative or positive and read your voltage from each battery. It should go something like 7, 14, 21, 28, 35, 42 volts. You either have a battery backwards or one is shorted and dead. Math is math....
