Default EZGO gas EH29C flooding & backfiring

Robin Engine, EH29C
Momentary choke required for engine to start. More choke than that, it floods out.
Today, I drove the cart for about 5 minutes. While I proceeded at half throttle, all was well, but while coasting downhill with light to no throttle, the engine backfired. After I stopped for a few minutes, I could smell gas and engine would not start. After leaving cart sit for about 8-10 minutes, it started. Something related to heat?

Try some new plugs first and ensure your plug wires are in good shape. Sounds like maybe it isnt firing on both cylinders all the time.

Check valve lash. Your inlet valves are probably closed up. Set to .004 thou.

Also make sure the throttle adjustment is correct and check to ensure the plate on the carb closes all the way when you release the pedal. If it is slightly open, even just a crack, it can continue to pull in fuel when you coast. But because you’re coasting the spark plugs aren’t firing. Then when you press the gas to go again there’s way more fuel than supposed to be so it can backfire, and cause other undesirable behavior

I have found a tip on adjusting valves which calls for “rotating drive clutch” . Where is this drive clutch? Do I have to remove something to get to it?

I have attached the portion of the procedure which calls for this “drive clutch” rotation. It’s the 2nd illustration.

The drive clutch is the clutch that attaches to the shaft on the outside of the engine. Turning the clutch is simply an easy means of turning the engine by hand so you can rotate the cam to where the valves are bottomed out.

sorry if I seem a little dumb, but I have no idea what a drive clutch looks like or where it is located. Do I have to remove something from the engine to find it? I have worked on valve adjustment on auto gasoline engines, but not golf cart engines. I am in a learning mode because they are different

It's the big round bell shaped thing on the side of the engine. Your drive belt rides on it.

i have checked for spark on both plugs and it is good
I adjusted valves to .004
compression is 150+ on both cylinders
Plugs were replaced 02/20, also air filter and carb
Replaced fuel lines & filter today
I think the stalling out was the result of a plugged fuel filter
Runs ok, except it still backfires
