Default 86 Marathon, why so loud?

Since I am going to be rebuilding the engine, I am curious if I can do anything to quiet the cart?

It doesn't seem to be as much exhaust noise as just engine noise.

People laugh because they can hear me coming from a mile away.

I have a 1978 ez go that’s loud also. Don’t think it’s exhaust either. Someone removed some of the insulation at front of engine compartment. It does vibrate and you can feel on your hand. Neighbors here me coming too!
My 1981 is really quiet though?

Haha I can relate to that, I used to get the same comments....

Mine got a lot quieter after I rebuilt it due to bad crank bearings, you might check for horizontal play in the crank......

I didn't realize it till I took the starter belt off to do some clutch work, surprisingly it still ran fine. But I found the play while handling the clutch, the fan on the other end could move about a quarter inch. I'm thinking the starter belt was tight enough to somewhat hold it in place and not hurt the seals??

I had a cart that was super noisy and I rebuilt the engine and found the roller bearings on the connecting rod were scored from rust since the cart sat for a long time. I replaced that bearing and it was smooth and quiet.
