Default 89 gas marathon starter generator

Hello all. I am having an issue with my starter generator. This is my 3rd new one in a year. I have a new battery also. The issue is that when I step on the gas pedal, there are times it engages right away. There are also other times when it will wind for about 10 seconds before it engages. I also put a new voltage regulator in and it is still giving me trouble. Does anyone have an idea on what might be happening? Thank you advance for the help!

To make this clear, when you say it engages, do you mean when the engine starts running on its own, or when the startergen starts turning?
If you mean when the engine starts running, then you might look at normal fuel spark issues, as well as 2 cycle specific issues like reed valves and the dreaded crank seal problem.

Now that the 5 pages of spam are gone, we can finally answer your question.

You are experiencing high resistance in the starter circuit. That is all of the large cables.

I suspect it's the one going from the battery positive to the solenoid, but you need to clean and check all of them.
Your FnR switch can be taken apart and cleaned also. The big copper lugs could have burn spots.
The FnR switch bottom lug is C. The cable coming from C should connect to the frame. From there it should split in two directions. Both of these cables are usually braided. One goes to the battery negative while the other goes to the engine block.

All of those connections need to be cleaned.

You can test the battery positive cable by bypassing it with jumper cables to the solenoid. There have been several occasions that hidden corrosion inside of that cable is causing the problem.
