Default new and need help, Bad controller

well my controller is shot, I use cart for camp grounds. I plan on 48v or maybe a 72v upgrade but right now I need the controller and want to only buy one,"use it on my 36v now and still have it maybe for the 72v upgrade"Is it possible?
Im thinking a 650 or 700 controller but will this burn up the motor right away? Im aware I need to basically replace everything to go that route for 72v.
its a lifted 2000 ezgo txt series 36v with 6 inch spindle lift , 23 inch tires, 4 seater

As far as burning up the motor, that won't happen, it will only pull what amps it needs. As for going from 36 to 72 with the same controller, I don't think thats possible as the controller is usually rated for the exact voltage. Alltrax models use the first two numbers to designate the intended voltage...

There are controllers that go from 48 to 72v but nothing I know of that goes from 36 to 72v, so you have a decision to make..... nearly every modern controller goes from 36 to 48v and most guys are good with 48v.....

P.S. some motors will burn up if allowed to draw enough amperage.
