Default batteries

My son noticed battery plates were showing and put water instead of distilled water in batteries and charged batteries. Is it a good idea to remove water to top of plates and replace with distilled water

no.
It is sulfuric acid in there and over time the water evaporates and you add distilled so as to not introduce any foreign chemicals.
If you drain it you will have to go buy electrolyte to fill it up.
Just dont add anything else but Distilled in the future.

That's the right answer

Possibly there was no harm done. Our local water (hard) is full of minerals. High in iron and copper, which screw up the chemical balance in the battery. But your water may be soft, which would be okay. Anyway, it is best to use distilled water to be safe
