Don Plowman, a vender here is in Mich. or Wisconsin. Smallblock450sl, is in Tacoma Wa. Both are the best there is! Hard to believe spark knock or pinging on a golf cart, unless its carbon build up. I would start looking at possible loose clutch parts, something like that. Does it run ok (getting high revs) or falling on its face? Think I would start with basic maintenance, cleaning carb. tune up for sure etc.

Chris, just read your other thread, yes the air box has to be sealed well. Stock motors will run lean if the box leaks. The 4 straps need to be there as well as the gasket (O-ring) in the top.

When things don't make since, I have to resort to basic maint. I just figure probably needs it anyway. Read this site, you will learn tons. Lots of good people on here smarter than me. Somebody will come by to help. I know this is a long shot, but I would take the clutch can off the primary clutch and check the weights for looseness. As well as checking to secondary sheave for looseness. Wobble on shaft.

Thanks for the nice complement Mike As I've posted before, a simple test, take the air box hose off at the carb and run the car...if it runs better, airbox problem. As for "spark knock", I allway's asume it is bad ground, the negative battery cable (at the starter/generator) had a 18 gauge wire "pigtailed" into the cable eye end. Cut the electrical tape and cut off the wire and put an eye end on it and mount it on the stud with the negative cable. The spark (TCI) is run off open/closed ground, so a bad ground, bad spark. I've also found loose (or broken) primary clutch weight/'s to cause a (sence of spark loss) at higher rpms. Good luck

ok this is my two cents and one of the reasons i took my engine out was because of the same noise. engine ran great until it was under a load or at high speed it sounded like a spark knock. so when i took the engine apart i found that the counter balancer at one end had egg shaped and was making the noise. when i would roll the engine over by hand it wouldnt make a noise. i had all the oil in my engine leak out on a trail ride and i think this was the area that took the brunt of no oil in the engine. it never smoked and ran fine it just had a slite knock under load and high speed.

Update
well, I drove with airbox to carb hose disconnected... seems to run worse... like it was fat / boggy so, I rewired the "pigtailed" ground (like advised here above) and soldered but while I was in there inspecting, i felt a concave ridge / worn area in the drive clutch near the top. as I was holding the drive clutch with my hands to remove the cover screws,,, my fingers went through the drive clutch sliding sheeve...

after removing the outer cover i noticed that the outer sheeve has alot of play on the shaft / bad bronze center bearing / and it seems kinda loose on the internals as well... kinda wiggley. but i am a Polaris not a yahama clutch guy...

SO, Clutch is TOAST. In my mind... so I have to lay the bet this might be where noise is comming from... or at least a good place to start since I dont need to frag the new belt...

question is... which way to go... a new yahama replacement or a comet.
Is there a "real world" difference on a stock motor unit with a lift and off road tires?

anybody got a clutch...? hate to go used but if there is a known good one laying around out there... I would be interested

THANKS to all
