rear end gear oil
hello, i need to change my rearend oil on a g1, 81, there is 2 drain plugs on it one is at the bottom, the other is about half way up the case,would it be ok to take off the upper one and remove the vent hose and fill it like that until about 1/2 in to the top?thanks

Yup fill it up until it reaches the the whole half way up. Anything extra in there will just blow out the vent tube when you are driving it.

The lower plug is the drain plug. The upper one is for checking the oil level. Proper oil level is even with the bottom of the check plug hole, or within 1/2" of that point. Drain the oil out of the bottom hole, refill through the upper hole until oil runs back out. If you overfill it too much, you run the risk of causing oil leaks by forcing oil through the seals.
Stick a piece of hose on the end of the gear oil bottle so you can feed the oil into the check plug hole. |

what is the wight of rear end gear oil do we use in a 1980 G1 Yamaha.

90w gear oil is specified, but I recommend getting synthetic 75-90w. Less drag,(more power!) especially in cold weather, and better protection overall. Pricey, but you only need a quart.
