Loose connections are typically the culprit for melting terminals.
Loose connections create resistance, which means heat, which means melting...
The terminal bolt is still attached to the ring terminal and it can see that it is certainly tight. I don't think it was overtightened. I don't wrench them down hard, but they are tighter than hand tight to be sure.

Nearly every fastener can be snugged until "tight", and if you aren't careful, you can easily overtighten battery terminals.
Thank you Yurtle. I will be very careful to not overtighten. Would wingnuts that are hand tightened be sufficient or would that be too loose?

I doubt many of us actually use a torque wrench, but use the nuts that come with the battery, as they are stainless and slightly oversized, for a good connection. Use a screwdriver style nut driver, or a 1/4" drive. I always place my hands on each and every connector at least once a month, after a long drive, to check for heat.

I also check them once a month when I check water, clean and apply protectant. Rather than simply giving them a twist every month, I slightly loosen them, then retighten.

Thanks for the link to the terminal repair RIB33024. I will definitely repair these batteries.

As for the cables, where do I buy golf Cart cables versus auto cables?

Buggy batts are totally different beasts than car batteries, where you pretty much toss one in and replace it when it dies. These take a little more care and maintenance, and the more you understand them, the better the chance you'll get your money's worth.

So what I gather so far is, this is occurring from either incorrect cabling, or mismatched batteries, or overtightened or undertightened battery terminal nuts.

I shouldn't have to look at anything else?

the correct answer is yes, no, maybe, probably, and we'll see

seriously, check each item, bring it up to spec and then check the next,
the problem could be due to one, or more of the items on the list,
or due to something that none of us have thought of 'yet'
