other than the batteries is there much difference between the 2007 I thought it was and what it actually is?

You're good on the batteries. 8s are better than 12s. You got lucky there. The series drive system is fine. It's a more simple system. It's not programmable but can be easily upgraded.

Well since I don't have what I thought I had will this system work as it is with either 36v or 48v?

It's a 48 volt car. It won't run on 36V

2001 DS model series drive cart, made in the 48th week of production in 2001. Like the Dawg said, it needs 48 volts to run. Series carts are the best in my opinion, you did good even though it's not what you expected.
