Default No Forward but have reverse w/sw202 contactor

The issue
Cart currently has no forward but does have reverse.
Issue started intermittently a couple of weeks ago but was able to put in reverse then worked when put back into forward.
Cart specs
1994.5 Medalist Series cart upgraded (aprox 5yrs ago) to 48v w/Alltrax SR48300, MJZ 400 solenoid and sw202 reversing contactor & 2 ga. cables.

The controller flashes green then goes to permanent green when accelerator is depressed, solenoid clicks as it should.
Is there a way to test the sw202 contactor to see if this is causing the issue?
Any suggestions and help are appreciated!
Thanks

I would switch the FWD and reverse wires on the contactor and see if you then have forward and not reverse. Your problem is almost certainly the reversing contactor.

There are 2 ways the contactor can fail.
1. the activation coil. This coil pushes the high amperage contacts together
2. The high amperage contacts. They can pit and burn over time.

1. when the F&R switch and the footpedal are activated the coil should have full battery power measured between the 2 small + and - terminals. When this happens the contacts are thrusted together resulting in an audible click. You should hear the click each time the pedal is depressed and again when it is released.

2. the high amperage contacts can pit under excessive loads. This pit is an exchange of metal from one contact to the other. Eventually this pit and transfer compromises the contact and results in a burned contact.
Usually when they miss fire a few times the contacts can be cleaned up. If the situation is let go until the contact stops the unit will be much harder to repair and should be replaced.

Thanks Volt & Scotty,
I pulled the reverse contactor out of the cart and found the housing was cracked, so I went ahead and took the cracked side apart and found moisture inside as well as the contacts corroded/rusted. I was able to clean the contacts off with some 320 sandpaper, dried the inside and then JB welded the crack in the housing.
Bottom line is it is working again.
Thanks again, this site is awesome!

Hello Volt_Ampere.

I am having the same problem and its driving me nuts. I did reverse the wires at the F&R switch and I still only had reverse. Does that mean that the contactor is working since we switched sides by reversing the wires?

No clue. What cart do you have and what kind of FNR switch do you have?

Most likely he just tested the on/off/on switch verifying both sides work so it's not the switch.
Does the contactor click in both directions?
