I hope you didn't order that controller on my input. I gave you 3 scenarios that would cause that, and explained how to rule out the 2 expensive ones. To be sure. We're all thinking thinking solenoid, but I like to rule out things instead of throwing parts. At least throw the cheaper parts first.
Good luck with the controller. Now if you wanting to upgrade anyways, then I understand. You can tell the wife I mislead you.

However, now that I think about it, if the resistor gets hot with A2 cable removed, then yes you may need a controller, because there is no load. The short must be in the controller. Still have an issue with solenoid not clicking though.
