Default 2 stroke , very little power in forward

I have been noticing I have been moving a little slower lately...I was running strong around my yard at 9 mph or so (not full speed) and it seemed to bog down all the way until it turned off even with full throttle . I smelled gas and as I thought it was flooded . I turned it off , took out the spark plug , and got the gas out . I then got it started and at full throttle will do 1-2 mph in forward, not revving hardly at all and sounds like it’s struggling to start, and in reverse will do a lot faster but still sounds a bit hesitant to start .... any ideas in reverse I can probably do full speed but I don’t want to attempt

That's usually an indication of crankshaft seals going bad.

So I ended up getting 60 lbs in forward and 80 in reverse. Do you think a top end rebuild will suffice ?

You have to remove the engine to do a top end. A twenty dollar set of seals is worth the extra effort.

That's weird, it shouldn't make a difference on compression whichever way it's turning.....

As long as you have it out to do a top end I would at least do crank seals too. In fact, I would do an entire rebuild. It doesn't cost that much more and you'll get a new crankshaft with all new crank bearings, seals etc.......

So maybe I should just pull the engine out today and get ready to do a full rebuild instead of just top end ?

Let's backup. What year Is this? 2pg, or 3pg? A 2pg runs up to 88. The drive belt goes side to side. A 2pg also has the engine mount attached to the head. I would have to look at a 3pg to see how it mounts.

Dabble, even though the piston only moves up, and down, the direction of movement will determine which side of the piston has a load applied by the connecting rod. His is worn out more in the forward direction.
