Re: Can solenoid studs be replaced?
Colt,
this is the obama way, but get a pack of brake caliper hose washers from Auto Zone, or whatever parts store you have. They are usually 10mm and if you put the cable and two of them on , the nut will grip the good threads that are left! They are pure copper and will do the job nicely! |

Re: Can solenoid studs be replaced?
After reading all the ideas & doing a little searching, I came across what may be your best "fix-it" option. They make what's called a coupling nut. It is a 5/16-18 hex nut that is 7/8" long!! If you put your terminal back on "without" a lockwasher (& maybe just a little removable loctite), you will engage enough threads (top & bottom) to give a good tight connection. Not sure what material the current nuts are, but these would probably be plated steel. If you google "coupling nut" you should get a lot of hits. This looks like a real simple low cost fix!! Good luck - RAY

Re: Can solenoid studs be replaced?
Man this is a great thread. Lol. I might just try all of these ideas and see which one works best.

Re: Can solenoid studs be replaced?
your local nut & bolt store will have thinner nuts. that or grind down the inner nut. a belleville or wave washer will buy you a little more thread engagement over a split washer.

Re: Can solenoid studs be replaced?
i think most of those studs are copper clad. you could try brazing some more material to the stud and re-cut the threads with a die. fresh electrical copper should make a good brazing rod.

Re: Can solenoid studs be replaced?
Yurtle, you win the award. I tried to put washers and use the outermost threads, and it stripped instantly. Went the route of removing the brass stud nut, and squeezed it between there! Works great Thanks

Re: Can solenoid studs be replaced?
Damm Dooms! A stud extender would have been perfect. Didn't even think about that. Thanks for the heads up. Now we know if this happens to somebody else.

Re: Can solenoid studs be replaced?
Mainly remember these threads are copper and copper is a very soft metal. The nut is steel which is harder so if overtightened, it's gonna eat up the threads.
Just give an eighth or quarter turn after the lock washer flattens ... that will hold it. I have never seen one of these nuts fall off |

Re: Can solenoid studs be replaced?
It didn't fall off
I took it off and guess initially tightened it down WAY to much. I have a thin about over tightening things. |
