how hot should the solenoid get?
Putting Pops through the paces and he is running well. 12 to 13 MPH, varied the speed up and down, and all is good.
How hot should the solenoid get? it isnt so hot that i cant touch it, but i wouldnt want to have to hold on to it. It feels hotter on the B+ side. Normal or trouble? I really dont want to burn up these new batteries or cables! thanks, |

Re: how hot should the solenoid get?
I'd remove and clean the connections and try again. Heat means resistance ( possible poor connection ). If it does the same thing after you clean the connections, the solenoid " may " be going south. Both the terminals should be the same temp. Is the coil part hot also? It should just get warm.

Re: how hot should the solenoid get?
is the coil part the cup shaped body? yes it is warm but the terminals are noticably hotter. will clean and retry. probably just get a new solenoid as wel,l this entire cart is suspect and $25 wont hurt.
thanks. |

Re: how hot should the solenoid get?
Ok, I installed the new solenoid and it also gets hot. I would say around 140. Didnt measure it, but it's close. Everything is clean and tight. I do get some heat in the 2ga cables but it seems to radiate out from solenoid. Controller is also warm, not hot, which I figured is normal being that it has a heat sink.

Re: how hot should the solenoid get?
Please answer all these questions.
What drive system? Series? What F&R? What controller? What solenoid? 2g cables throughout the cart? What size tires? How many passengers? What terrain? How old are the batteries? Then we can answer your solenoid question. |

Re: how hot should the solenoid get?
You have a 50 amp solenoid and a 300 amp controller. As long as you are playing golf this set up should be okay. Good for short runs of 175 yards ( or as far as you can hit the ball) and then rest, cool, and go a 100yds again. This is what the stock equipment was engineered for. Any other type of use or additional load (which is why we ask how many people and what type of terrain) will require additional power.
It sounds like you need a solenoid upgrade. Any restriction in the amperage flow will result in additional heat. |

Re: how hot should the solenoid get?
GOLF? what the heck is that? This cart is really for the kids to drive around the yard. They usually drive around the house for a lap or two then go run around for a while then ride again. So kind of like golf...
I really dont mind if i blow up a solenoid, but dont really want to send the money on an upgrade just yet (new batts and 2ga cable but a dent in the expendible income column). However i really dont want to damage any of the more expensive items. Knowing that the solenoid with have a high failure rate am i ok to run this solenoid without damaging other parts? Thanks for all the help Scotty, (I will be visiting Cartsunlimited.com, very soon ) |
