Default 4-12V's to 6-8V's

Hello I have a 2000 ds (regen I believe, cuz has rocker switch for f & r). Well someone before me had switched to 4-12V batteries from 6-8V's. My question is - is there anything I have to do to switch back to 6-8V's besides extra cables?. I figure as long as the cart is getting 48v what's the difference. I just want make sure the guy before me didn't do anything special to the electrical system when doing so. And if there's anything special I need to do like resetting the computer to charge differently. Or will it automatically sense that. Thanks in advance for any help.
