How Hot is Too Hot?
A few Weeks back i bought an AXE4855 from scottyb, for my 1990 marathon. Besides the controller and solenoid everything else is stock. I expect heat in the cables and f&r switch, but how hot should the motor be? With the stock controller it never got hot, barely even got warm. Ive felt of my brothers 2000 something ezgo PDS and his was real hot and it is completely stock. 500 amps @ 48volts is alot for that old motor i feel cause something under the seat is smelling like hot electronics. The motor is the hottest thing to the touch. Is it getting too hot?

Re: How Hot is Too Hot?
It sounds like it is getting a little hot, how are you using it? How are you driving? how many people are riding on it?

Re: How Hot is Too Hot?
Two people off road mostly, with a few big hills. After I posted earlier I went for a long ride, when I got back to put it on the charger the f&r switch was smoking a little. The motor was not hot this time, I was easier on the throttle.

Re: How Hot is Too Hot?
Now you know what you have to do for your motor and you know you will need to upgrade the cables and F&R to complete the upgrade.

Re: How Hot is Too Hot?
I ordered 2 guage cables. Would buying the hd cam for the f&r switch upgrade it good enough or do I need to buy the whole expensive deal? Meaning the complete new switch. What is even making it smoke? There isnt anything in there but metal.

Re: How Hot is Too Hot?
The FNR is body is some type of fiberglass. Once it gets hot enough to smoke, it may be too late to salvage.

This is why we say it is so important to put the HD F&R and HD cables in place before installing the big controllers and motors which draw more amperage and create the potential for more heat. Heat is caused by resistance in the current flow, resistance is caused by corrosion and/or too small a conductor. |
