36 volt motor in 48 volt cart

I have seen this reffered to and tried a search but could not find a discussion. My questions are, what are pros and cons, what do you gain/lose and can u just swap motors or do you have to change other parts. I have a 99 ds series cart that I plan to lift for hunting. Thanks in advance

i did it and my cart goes about 17mph, i think its worth it

IN a 48v cart you can simply swap the motor. The 36v motor will produce 33% more toque and speed when run on 48v, Depending upon your driving habits and the loads you put on the motor it may shorten it's useful life.

No problem. I think I may have been one of the first proponents of tossing a 36v motor into a 48v cart as an upgrade. Previously we had been putting 48v batteries and drive controls in 36v carts when it occurred to me that the reverse would result in equal results. It has been done by many readers. All of them gave good reviews. Good Luck

Interesting subject. I have just purchased an after market series motor that is 36/48 volt. HP and RPM are stated for both setups. On perusing their catalogue, there are many 36/48 volt motors for torque/speed applications.

I took my 91 36v DS and upgraded the system to 48v and used the original 36v motor. That was almost 3 years ago and the cart still jams around running ~20-23 MPH flat surfaces. Just Sunday I was cruising the neighborhood and I was clocking the cart (with GPS) at 14MPH on steep hills and 23 on flat ground. (found that with just a LSV sign plus all the items I had already done on the cart, I was legal to drive on roads with speed limits of 35 or less, which is great because my entire city is 35 or less) Now I wave at the cops as I go by.. Got to love Texas laws..

The controller and solenoid have to be rated for 48v. and if you are upgrading a series cart you need to upgrade the F&R. F&R replacement is best for older carts, newer carts can be fitted with a HD switch cam. HD cables are also needed.
